| 9th-11th Welcome Letter |
Dear Honors English Student,
You have been accepted into the Honors English course for the 2006-2007 school year. This course is designed for the highly motivated student who has demonstrated a high degree of competence in English studies. Independent learning, examination of complex social themes and advanced planning are major components of the course, and key factors in the student's success. Required readings may include controversial material depicting violence and language indigenous to the historical, cultural and geographic setting of the works. These works have been selected because of their appropriateness to curriculum goals, social and historical background and author's purpose, literary quality, and critical review. They appear on recommended reading lists and are deemed appropriate for students pursuing accelerated/advanced placement studies while still in high school. It is the policy of the school board that a student who objects to the content of any of these works may read an alternative work of comparable literary quality as approved by the teacher.
The culmination of this curriculum is participation in the Advanced Placement Testing Program, which could result in the awarding of college credits and a substantial savings in college tuition fees. A passing score on four or more AP exams could earn you "sophomore status" in some colleges and universities throughout the country.
As a way of preparing for this course, you must complete the following readings and follow-up activities. (These books can be borrowed for the summer by contacting the main office. They can also be purchased at local bookstores.)
We welcome you to the Honors English Program and hope that you take full advantage of this academically rewarding and enriching learning experience.
With our good wishes for a relaxing and intellectually enriching summer.
