Summer Reading Assignment

Read the works prescribed for your grade. Select five quotes per work. These quotes should reflect major elements of the piece, such as character development, the importance of setting, and essential conflicts. Respond to each of these quotes by analyzing its significance and making connections. Finally, for each piece, write a paragraph in which you respond to the work as a whole. In your response, consider theme, structure, point of view, and tone. It might be useful to keep some type of journal as you read in which you keep track of significant events, note important characters, and jot down potential quotes for analysis. Though this journal will not be graded, it will be a valuable tool for class discussion and written work. Please keep in mind that your teachers are very familiar with the content of Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, and on-line abridged sources. Read each of the works that you are assigned in its entirely, and craft original responses to each assignment.

This assignment is worth 45 points, 15 points per work, and is due to your English teacher the day after Labor Day, regardless of whether your English class is scheduled for the fall or spring semester. As per school policy, one letter grade will be deducted for each day this assignment is late.

This assignment will be the foundation of your class discussion. It will also serve to remind you of th essential points in your summer reading.

The end of reading is not more books but more life.-Holbrook Jackson
