Unauthorized access to school district systems

For Immediate Release

Unauthorized access to school district systems

The Northwestern Lehigh School District discovered illegal, unauthorized access to several computer systems in late February.  Superintendent Dr. Mary Anne Wright said the District took immediate steps to protect student and staff information including shutting down the student information system, and quickly instituted steps to enhance security.  At that time, the matter was turned over to the PA State Police at Fogelsville.

“The District assisted the Pennsylvania State Police in efforts to identify and apprehend the person responsible for this incident." Superintendent Wright said. “The acts were intentional, criminal action to obtain protected information,” Wright said.  The District said there is no evidence that any confidential information has been used for illegal purposes.

“We deeply regret this incident and that this unauthorized access occurred, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause,” Wright said. The District is also reviewing all of its computer-security procedures. “We are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again, and new security procedures are in place to better assure that our systems are protected from such attempts.”

All parents whose children’s information was accessed are being notified and meetings to address student and staff concerns are being scheduled.
