Math

  • Our mathematics series is called envision Math Common Core.  This series is published by Pearson. Students will be involved in many "hands-on" activities along with learning key strategies to solve problems.  We will focus, more than ever, on applying learning to real-world problem solving. Some concepts and strategies taught will be different then many of us "more-seasoned" individuals are used to.  Please remember I am here to answer any questions or help with any confusion if necessary.  When starting a new topic in math, we try to send home information that explains the strategies being taught.

We will begin math with a review of basic multiplication and division facts.  Following that will be our study on place value and reading, writing, and rounding large numbers up to 100,000,000. Other units of study this year will be in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as units on fractions, decimals, measuring, graphing, probability, and geometry.  Problem-solving strategies will be taught and practiced throughout the year.

As in the past, all children will be responsible for knowing the basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, through the 9's. Timed speed tests will be given throughout the year (these will not be part of their math grade).  Tests have 50 basic facts and students should strive to get 100% of the problems correct.  Your child is encouraged to practice at home.  We cannot stress enough the importance of knowing these facts.  They are the foundation of every math unit we study.
