• The Early Bird: Only want to work in the mornings? Pick up a partial morning run and have the rest of your day completely free.

• The Consistent Routine: Prefer consistency? Drive the same route for both your morning and afternoon runs, giving you a steady, dependable schedule.

• The Weekend Warrior / Night Owl: Have another job? Work nights and weekends as an extracurricular driver for sports, trips, and events.

Run Times

• Full runs are approximately 2-3 hours in the morning and 2-3 hours in the afternoon (may vary)
• Partial runs are approximately 2-3 hours total in a day (may be morning or afternoon)
• Extracurricular runs range based on the occasion (full or half day field trips, sports trips, evening, and weekends)
  • Drivers may choose runs based on availability

Extracurricular Driver: $22.00/hr

Van Driver (part-time): $19.81/hr

CDL Driver (part-time): $30.26/hr

Substitute Van Driver: $15.00/hr

Substitute Bus Driver: $22.00/hr

Training Rate: $19.81/hr

 All training is paid for by NWLSD, no out of pocket costs.

• Must complete 14hrs. of classroom time provided by NWLSD trainer
• Obtain a driver physical
• Take CDL permit test at DMV
  • Provide NWLSD copy of permit (once received, NWLSD pays for 14 hours of classroom time).
• Undergo a drug test
  • Once a negative drug test is provided to NWLSD, you will be assigned to a NWLSD trainer to do on the road training in bus (min.  6 hrs)
• Take road test at CLIU
  • Once CDL is obtained, complete mentoring process on an actual run with all 3 NWLSD trainers. When all 3 trainers sign off that you are released to drive for NWLSD, then the driver has the opportunity to become a sub cdl driver or bid on a cdl run (if available)

To ensure a safe environment, all new hires are required to complete standard pre-employment screening, including background clearances, a physical exam, and a TB test.

Do I need to pay for training?

No, all training is paid for by NWLSD. There are no out of pocket costs other than obtaining your employment clearances.

Do I need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to apply? 

No, for Van Drivers, a standard valid driver's license and a clean driving record is all you need. A CDL is required for Bus Drivers, however, if you don't have one yet, don't let that stop you! We offer comprehensive, paid training to help qualified candidates earn their CDL and necessary endorsements.

Does my non-school bus CDL count?

Unfortunately no, if an applicant has a CDL (not school bus), they still need to go through the whole process.

Does NWLSD honor School Bus CDLs from other Districts?

Yes, this applicant must just complete the mentoring process on a run with 3 NWLSD trainers.

Can I change my availability later on?

Yes, we pride ourselves on flexibility! While we love consistency for our students and routes, we understand that life changes. You can work with our transportation team to adjust your preferred runs as semesters change or new personal commitments pop up.

Are background checks required? 

Yes. Because the safety of our students and community is our absolute top priority, all successful applicants must pass a routine background check, fingerprinting, and a safe-driving record review.

Do part-time or substitute drivers get benefits?

No, benefits are only offered for our full-time positions. However, our part-time and substitute roles offer competitive hourly pay and the ultimate flexibility to control your own schedule!
