Elementary Schools
Substitute teachers are essential members of our school community. They help to keep learning moving forward when a teacher is out and contribute to the positive tone of the day.
In our building, substitute teachers:
-
Follow the lesson plans and daily schedules left by the classroom teacher.
-
Support students’ learning and engagement throughout the day.
-
Interact with students and staff members to build a positive, respectful, and welcoming classroom environment.
-
Collaborate with other teachers and support staff to ensure the day runs smoothly.
-
Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other routines as outlined in the schedule.
-
Are encouraged to ask questions and seek support from staff members nearby.
Every day is a little different, but the overall goal is the same- providing students with a safe, caring, and consistent learning environment while their teacher is away. Substitutes play a key role in maintaining the flow of instruction and the sense of community that makes our school a great place to learn.
Middle School
Substitute teachers at Northwestern Lehigh Middle School are an important part of our team, helping keep learning on track when teachers are away. The workday runs from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with 50-minute class periods. Substitute teachers use lesson plans left by the regular teacher to facilitate the learning process. Our middle school uses a team structure, meaning you’ll have three or four supportive teachers working alongside you throughout the day, ready to help when needed. Substitutes maintain classroom routines, take attendance, and create a positive, structured environment for students. You’ll also find our office staff friendly, welcoming, and eager to support you, making each day a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in our students’ learning and growth.
High School
High School students take four, 80-minute classes per day. Substitutes can expect to oversee at least three classes per day, do duty coverage which may include cafeteria duty, hall duty, outside morning duty, and cover a fourth class as needed by the administration. During classes, substitutes can expect to take daily attendance, use technology including, but not limited to, Interactive whiteboards, laptops, and Google Classroom, assist students as needed on assignments, create and issue hall passes for students, and implement strong classroom management skills. The HS day runs from 7:30-2:37 for substitutes and students. Substitute teachers will be given a teacher schedule, laptop, temporary badge, classroom key, and Substitute Teacher handbook and paperwork upon arrival each day and are expected to return all of these items upon the conclusion of their day.
