Avoid Phishing Emails

In this day and age, cybersecurity must be at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts as they conduct their personal and professional lives online. Ill-intended actors have identified public schools as easy targets for such attacks and have increased their efforts in recent years. For example, data gathered by K12 Security Information Exchange shows that, between April 2016 and November 2022, over 1,600 cyberattacks targeted school districts across the U.S.

Phishing occurs when attackers impersonate legitimate organizations or individuals to steal sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details. These attacks often come through emails or messages that look trustworthy but contain malicious links or attachments.

To stay protected against phishing emails:

  • Check the sender’s email address – Phishing emails often come from slightly altered addresses.
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links or attachments – Hover over links to verify their legitimacy before clicking.
  • Look for urgent or unusual requests – Be cautious of emails that create a sense of urgency or ask for sensitive information.
  • Never provide credentials – We will never ask you to provide us with your password.
  • Report suspicious emails – If something looks off, report it to helpdesk@nwlehighsd.org immediately.
