Master Facility Plan
Our Master Facility Plan is a comprehensive plan that is developed by an architectural firm that evaluates the needs across the district with a facility lens. It is typically reevaluated every 1 - 5 years and develops recommendations for facility needs, plans phases and priorities across the next few years as the District looks forward in planning maintenance and facility needs.
Phase 01: Elementary Reconfiguration
As many of you know, we have experienced capacity issues at Northwestern Elementary for many years. Our prior Master Facility Plan, that was completed in 2014, recommended that the enrollment would decrease and it was not recommended to make any changes in our elementary buildings at that time.
Earlier this school year, the Board of Directors commissioned Alloy 5 to update our Master Facility Plan and provide updated enrollment projections. In April, at the workshop meeting, the board of directors heard the current facility issues and was presented a list of options and recommendations to address those facility issues at both elementary schools, the middle school, the high school cafeteria, and the field house in the stadium.
The first phase of the recommendations is reconfiguration of the District elementary schools to address the space/capacity issues currently being experienced at Northwestern Elementary. This will allow us to better utilize the classrooms that are not currently in use at Weisenberg Elementary. There are several options to address the current capacity issues:
Phase 01 - Weisenberg & Northwestern Elementary
1a - Realign to K-3 at Weisenberg & 4-5 at Northwestern Elementary
1b - Realign to K-2 at Weisenberg & 3-5 at Northwestern Elementary
1c - Redraw the district lines and address the cafeteria at Northwestern Elementary
1d - No realignment or redrawing the district lines
1e - Grade 5 returning to the middle school
Our administrative team is charged with providing options for the board to discuss and consider for potential solutions to issues within the school district. We acknowledge none of the options are a perfect solution for everyone. Heavily weighted as part of our recommendation will be to evaluate the option that is educationally, equitably, and most efficiently utilizes our space for students who attend Northwestern Lehigh now and in the future. This recommendation does not come without research of best practices, advantages and disadvantages of all options, considering variables such as but not limited to: transportation, impact on parents including parent pick up and events in both schools, staffing, professional development, schedules, use of space, and costs.
We believe constructive feedback about the options can only make the decision a better one for all the children who are currently enrolled in our District elementary schools and those little Tigers that will become elementary students in the next few years. We want the solution to be a positive one for all of our students and need your assistance to make it a positive transition for the Northwestern Lehigh School District.
We hope you can make one or both of the meetings, watch live online, or watch the video at a later date. We appreciate your constructive feedback to move us toward a positive solution!
